Jack Clarke put on an impressive display in his first ever World Endurance Championship event in the six hour race at Spa Circuit in Belgium last weekend (4/5 May). The young driver from Effingham in Surrey led his team – Boutsen Ginion Racing – to a fifth place in the LMP2 class against the toughest sportscar competition in the world.
As ever at Spa Circuit in the Ardennes forest, the conditions were very difficult and although qualifying took place in the dry, the race started in very damp conditions with excessive spray making visibility almost non existent. Jack was given the job of qualifying his Oreca Nissan Prototype and starting the race with a double stint – one and a half hours. He was to improve the ninth place grid position to fourth place at the end of his first double stint. He then returned to the car for the final 45 minutes and crossed the line in fifth in the LMP2 class.
“That was an incredible experience for me,” said Jack. “The conditions were really hard with damp, dry and rain all in one race. It was the first time I have experienced ‘racing within a race’ and the LMP1 hybrid-engined Audis were so quiet and so fast that they seemed to appear from nowhere so you had to be ultra aware of everything around you – front and behind. The car was reliable and I was pleased with my consistent lap times but above all I gained incredible experience racing against some of my heroes on such a huge stage. I can take away a great deal of positives from this weekend.”
Jack will return to the track in four weeks time, this time at the wheel of his McLaren MP4 GT3 12C for Round Two of the Blancpain Endurance Championship at Silverstone on Sunday June 3rd.
